Capricious Carnations

10”x10” oil on canvas

Tired of the usual predictable composition strategy of thirds, I shifted everything up in this painting. The horizon line being almost to the middle of the painting felt rebellious, but to keep it from feeling too uncomfortable, I gave more weight and contrast to the flowers and greenery to draw the eye around the center, while the vertical lines of the vases, greenery, and shadows, and the pool of reflected light below, pull the eye up and down. Meanwhile, the capricious purple carnations remain out of their vases, lying with the rocks.
