Walking the same paths

Growing up in rural Missouri, we often heard coyotes yipping and howling and barking at night, sometimes quite close to our home. Knowing that coyotes almost never attack humans, hearing them was more exciting than frightening. It felt special to have this audible glimpse into their world, a wildness that overlapped with our land where tedious things happened like cutting and bailing hay and scraping rust off metal gates.

This is my first coyote painting. I photographed her at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge in early 2023 as she walked alone in a snowy field, pausing every once in a while to look off in the distance. I was instantly drawn to a photo of her as she turned and took a step to continue on her way, and I could not wait to paint it. She has become the muse of several coyote paintings.
