This painting is all about showing our multi-faceted selves and the storied path we’ve lived. When planning this painting’s composition, I chose a canvas that I had previously painted flowers onto but then set aside. I rotated the canvas and carefullly added the elephant while still preserving much of what was already there. This layering felt like creating windows into the past (of the canvas, of the elephant, of the viewer). Our stories are always changing, building, overlapping, and often we don’t share these layers with others in our lives. The experiences of the elephant helps to define his world just as ours do for us.
