Most of my still life paintings were each done in one day - I prefer to paint “wet on wet”, and I wanted to avoid complications with the flowers decaying - with touch-ups and small adjustments happening on following days. When I painted this one, however, I had to step away for a few hours. When I came back to finish that evening, I found the flowers lying on the table had wilted, creating the challenge of merging what I had done initially with the new reality. I was able to rely somewhat on a photo I had taken of the setup that morning, but the difference between the standing flowers and the wilted ones stands out to me. I still really like this painting - the brush work was loose and expressive - and for me it holds a life lesson: sometimes plans/expectations change, and we have to adjust. If we can focus on reality and not what was or should have been, we will have better results.
