In 2019 I created a small series of paintings of stars and solar flares. This was partly in an effort to branch out from my initial steps into creating space-related art with my MarsScapes, and was definitely out of my comfort zone. But it was a fun change. All three 14"x14" paintings were created in oil on canvas with palette knife, and are named after bright stars in our sky, Betelgeuse (red), Capella (yellow), and Spica (blue).
Capella, the 3rd brightest star in the northern celestial hemisphere, is a quadruple star system composed of two binaries: two bright yellow giant stars and two small red dwarfs. Here I represent one of the primary Capella stars with palette knife and many layers of paint,
